Download Codex from official sources

OpenAI distributes Codex in three forms. The Codex CLI installs from chatgpt.com, npm, or Homebrew. The desktop app is now the ChatGPT desktop app, which includes Codex, for macOS, Windows, and Linux (preview). The IDE extension comes from your editor's marketplace. Codex is not distributed as a standalone download from third-party sites.

If you’re not sure, start with the CLI. It is the smallest install and works the same way on every operating system. You can add the app or the editor extension later. They share the same configuration and sign-in cache. See Install Codex for a side-by-side comparison.

Download by operating system

  • macOS: CLI via the official installer or Homebrew, plus the ChatGPT desktop app.
  • Windows: CLI via the official PowerShell installer, plus the desktop app from the Microsoft Store.
  • Linux: CLI via the official installer or npm, plus the desktop app preview packages for Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, and Arch.

The official places Codex comes from

These are the only sources we link to for Codex files:

  1. chatgpt.com/codex/install.sh and chatgpt.com/codex/install.ps1. These are the official standalone CLI installers. The README says they download from releases.openai.com/codex and fall back to GitHub Releases.
  2. The openai/codex GitHub releases page, which has prebuilt CLI binaries.
  3. The @openai/codex package on npm.
  4. The codex cask on Homebrew.
  5. chatgpt.com/download and the Microsoft Store listing for the desktop app.
  6. OpenAI’s Linux package links on persistent.oaistatic.com, published in the Linux app docs.

If a site offers a “Codex.exe” or “Codex.dmg” from anywhere else, don’t run it. Here’s how to check what you have.

“CODEX” is also the name of an unrelated group known for distributing cracked games. This site is only about OpenAI’s coding agent, and we don’t link to or discuss pirated software.

Questions people ask

Is Codex free to download?

The software is free to install. Using it requires signing in, either with a ChatGPT account on an eligible plan (the README lists Plus, Pro, Business, Edu, and Enterprise) or with an OpenAI API key billed at API rates.

Is there still a separate Codex desktop app?

OpenAI's current docs describe the desktop experience as the ChatGPT desktop app, where you choose Codex for software work. The Codex README says you can also run 'codex app' from the CLI or visit the Codex app page on chatgpt.com.

Can I download Codex from this site?

No. We never host or mirror Codex files. Every download link here goes to an official OpenAI or first-party source.
