Codex CLI
The official installer works on most distributions:
curl -fsSL https://chatgpt.com/codex/install.sh | sh
Or with npm:
npm install -g @openai/codex
The CLI’s requirements page lists Ubuntu 20.04+ or Debian 10+, 4 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended), and optionally Git 2.23+. If you download a binary by hand from GitHub Releases, choose codex-x86_64-unknown-linux-musl.tar.gz or codex-aarch64-unknown-linux-musl.tar.gz, then rename the extracted file to codex.
Desktop app preview
First check your architecture:
uname -m
x86_64 means x64. aarch64 or arm64 means ARM64. Then get the matching package from OpenAI’s Linux app page:
| Distribution | Package | Install command |
|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu, Debian | .deb | sudo apt install ./chatgpt_amd64.deb |
| Fedora | .rpm | sudo dnf install ./chatgpt.x86_64.rpm |
| Arch Linux | install script | see OpenAI’s Linux docs |
For ARM64, the files are chatgpt_arm64.deb and chatgpt.aarch64.rpm. After installing, open ChatGPT from your applications menu or run chatgpt, sign in, and choose Codex.
The packages set up a signed OpenAI repository, so updates come through your package manager:
# Ubuntu / Debian
sudo apt update && sudo apt install --only-upgrade chatgpt
# Fedora
sudo dnf upgrade --refresh chatgpt
Wayland
OpenAI calls native Wayland support experimental. The app uses XWayland when available. To try native Wayland, quit the app fully and launch it with chatgpt --ozone-platform=wayland.
