The latest Codex CLI release we saw was 0.162.1, tagged rust-v0.162.1 on GitHub and published October 9, 2026. Check your version with codex --version. OpenAI publishes release notes on the openai/codex GitHub releases page and in its Codex changelog. Update with the same method you used to install.
The desktop app can bundle a different Codex version from your CLI. On macOS, check the app’s copy with /Applications/Codex.app/Contents/Resources/codex --version.
WSL1: supported through Codex 0.114. From 0.115 the Linux sandbox uses bubblewrap, so WSL2 is required (source: OpenAI’s Windows docs).
Questions people ask
Why are GitHub release tags named rust-v...?
The Codex CLI is written in Rust, and its GitHub release tags use the rust-v prefix, for example rust-v0.162.1. The number after it is the version that codex --version reports.
Should I update right away?
For daily work, updating within a few days is reasonable. If Codex runs in CI, pin a version and update deliberately after reading the release notes.
