Fix a Codex feature that works in the CLI but not the desktop app

The ChatGPT desktop app and the Codex CLI can include different Codex versions, so a feature can reach one surface before the other. Compare versions with codex --version for the CLI. On macOS, run /Applications/Codex.app/Contents/Resources/codex --version for the copy bundled in the app. Then update whichever one is behind.

Applies to: ChatGPT desktop app, Codex CLI

Compare the two versions

# The CLI on your PATH
codex --version

# The Codex bundled with the desktop app (macOS)
/Applications/Codex.app/Contents/Resources/codex --version

Then

  • If the CLI is newer, the feature may simply not be in the app yet. Update the app, or use the CLI for that task for now.
  • If the app is newer, update the CLI.
  • If both match and the feature still doesn’t work, check whether it’s marked experimental or needs a feature flag under [features] in config.toml. Then search the openai/codex issues.
