Fix Git not detected for projects opened from \\wsl$
When the Windows-native Codex agent opens a project through \\wsl$, Git may not be detected and the review features stop working. OpenAI's workaround is to store the project on a Windows drive and reach it from WSL via /mnt/<drive>/. Make sure Git is installed natively on Windows too, with winget install Git.Git. Or switch the agent itself to WSL.
Applies to: Windows, ChatGPT desktop app, WSL2
Fix 1: Install Git on Windows
Without a native Windows Git, the app can’t use some features. From PowerShell or cmd.exe:
winget install Git.Git
Restart the app afterwards.
Fix 2: Keep the project on the Windows drive
Move or clone the repository to a Windows path, such as C:\code\my-app. From WSL you can still reach it at /mnt/c/code/my-app. OpenAI describes this as the most reliable setup for the Windows-native agent.
Fix 3: Run the agent in WSL instead
If your project must live in the Linux filesystem, open Settings, switch the agent from Windows native to WSL, and restart the app. See Codex with WSL2.
